Weekly Spotlight: Patience

IMG_5871.JPG

Here at MCO Orlando, we want the individuals we hire to work hard, be willing to learn, and be goal driven. Often times, people think a college degree is necessary to be successful, but that’s not always true. Working your way up from the top with determination is what we pride ourselves in here at MCO Orlando. This week, I had the honor of speaking to Patience, a sales Leader, about her life and things that lead her to become part of the MCO Orlando family. If you think you’re like Patience, apply today by sending your resume to hr@mco-Orlando.com!

Here’s our interview:

Where are you from?

I was born in Columbia, South Carolina and lived in New Hampshire for 13 years.

Where did you work before this?

            A retail store called Winsdor.

How was it different from MCO Orlando?

Working in retail, I was an assistant manager so I was training people and creating schedules instead of selling products. The environment was different, so I couldn’t create a personal relationship there like I can here. I hang out with my employees here. A nice benefit is I get to go outside and be active.

How long did it take you to get promoted?

It took me 3 weeks to be promoted to leadership!

Favorite thing about working here?

The family environment: it’s social and encouraging! I also like the money haha.

Team night: Bowling!

For our Thursday team night, we gathered at Boardwalk Bowl for a few rounds of bowling. We love competition in and out of the field, so a little friendly competition never hurt anybody! Unfortunately, our bosses were out of town but the team managed to hold their own and lead the team night with ease. It’s always good to remind ourselves to work hard, but play even harder. Friends, family, food and fun we’re the themes of the night. To more team nights like these!

Here are some photos, but they really don’t do justice showing just how much fun we had!

Team night: promotion edition

Early Saturday morning, a few of us at the office discovered the good news: Shekinah Mouzon was promoted to assistant manager. In MCO Orlando, this is a big deal. When offered a position here, everyone starts at the same level. We valuing working our employees up to higher positions; therefore, promoting from within. Shekinah started at at the same position as everyone here. Through her hard work, determination, dedication, and passion, she managed to quickly be promoted multiple times. Now, Shekinah is close to opening up her own office. We are so proud of Shekinah and all the amazing things she has accomplished. We know she will continue to do spectacular things now and in her future!

Instead of having the typical team night, we decided to go big or go home! We surprised Shekinah at Castaway’s sports bar and grill with a bunch of food, decorations, cake, gifts, and most importantly, her mom. Her mom drove 3 hours just for her promotion, how sweet!

Here are so photos documenting our night! IMG_6622.JPGIMG_6621.JPG

Feature story: Eli

Incredible stories are all around us: far and wide. This time, we didn’t have to look far. Eli is a valued entrepreneur here at MCO Orlando. He is inspiring to us in his ways of success and how it came about. Therefore, we decided to interview him to see what makes him the incredible man he is today.

27858146_10215592732115436_3822701226909385116_n-1.jpg

Question 1: Hey Eli, could you give us some background about yourself?

A: “I grew up on the island, Saint Thomas Virgin Islands. Culture is different from here. Food is always home cooked. My favorite has to be stew chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains. I moved to Jacksonville when I was 17 for a full scholarship. Even though I have cousins over there, I was by myself. I came here because there is only so much to do in the islands and I heard America is the land of opportunity so I thought, why not? There’s this sort of island mentality– do what you have to do to get to America. I have to make sure I have everything in order when I’m here (in America) to make my time worth it. I am the first born of my family, so it’s a crazy and big step for me to come here all on my own. I am glad my parents saw my potential and let me come.”

Question 2: So you moved to the states alone, what caused you to do that?

A: “Opportunity. As simple as that.”

Question 3: I was told you are doing really well in college while working a full time job. What’s your secret?

A: “Time management and staying focused. There are lots of distractions out there but you have to make sacrifices. Hanging with my boys was great and all but I have priorities that come before that now. Sunday’s are homework days. I have to make those necessary sacrifices. I have 5 classes and I’m working full time.”

Question 4: Is there anything that inspires you to be the person you are today?

A: “My parents are my motivation since they keep me in check. They remind me how rough it was for them. I know my path is easier so I don’t take it for granted. My family lets me know if I mess up, which I appreciate.”

Question 5: So you won the cruise contest offered by MCO Orlando. at the holiday party, congratulations! How was it?

A: “I didn’t want it to end. We went to Free port, Bahamas and did a Jeep excursion which is a tour around the island. We got to see everything. We got to stop at the beach where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed, it was so cool. It was also good to be back in island waters. We ate some good island foods. We ate a lot haha. It was a 3 day/2 night cruise. All of this because of the holiday contest and I got second place. This was my first cruise I’ve even been on thanks to MCO Orlando.!”

Question 6: Any words of advice or wisdom you can offer?

A:  “If you’re not focused, you have to fix it. Know what you want in life and never forget it.”

Team night: Bowling edition

Last week Thursday, the crew gathered at Boardwalk Bowling to strike down some pins. We had our largest turnout ever! It’s really a sight to behold having all your employees come out and bond together. We played with two 6 person teams. As the night prolonged, everyone ended up bowling! We appreciate the MCO Orlando. employees coming out, see you on Wednesday!
